What we offer on a school trip
A chance to experience what life was like on an Elizabethan galleon onboard a full scale reconstruction of Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hinde.
We offer a range of programmes from KS1 – 4 specifically designed to complement the National Curriculum. Come aboard to discover fascinating talks, our highly acclaimed ‘living history’ experiences and exciting educational tours.
Our costumed educators breathe life into history with tours, demonstrations and reenactments which paint a vivid picture of the world Drake circumnavigated.
What makes us a great choice for education
Our programmes are designed to complement learning inside the classroom by allowing students to explore a historical environment and get a flavour of what life was like onboard an Elizabethan Galleon.
What was it like to sleep on a crowded gun deck? What did it feel like to raise a heavy anchor? How do you fire a 16th-century canon? Where did the sailors go to the toilet? Why on earth would anyone go to sea?
At The Golden Hinde, we believe understanding lived experience is vital to understanding history and encourage students to consider the ship as a valuable source of historical information.
What is typically included on our school trips
KS1 – 2
Our 1hr KS1 – 2 programmes are designed to enliven history for young students. What did it mean to be a pirate or privateer? Who were the Elizabethan explorers and what did they discover? What was life like on board a tudor ship?
Our programmes are fully interactive and include educational games, vivid storytelling and the chance to get hands-on with our ‘living museum’.
KS3 – 4
Our 1hr KS3 – 4 programmes are made with the curriculum in mind. Through dramatisation and demonstration our costumed educators uncover the events surrounding the voyage, encouraging students to situate Drake within the historical landscape and use the voyage of the Golden Hinde as a lens through which to explore the Early Modern world.
Learning Objectives:
Why did Drake’s voyage happen and why was it important?
What can understanding the motivations, nature and outcomes of the voyage teach us about the Early Modern world?
The ship givens us a glimpse into the ‘lived experience’ aboard an Elizabethan Galleon. How can we use this to enrich our understanding of history?

Took a group of 43 Y9 and Y10 students on a History trip here and the tour guide was amazing! Funny, relatable, and really brought the ship to life for them! Not only that, but they were very understanding when we kept adding students to our invoice, right up till the day before our visit AND were very accommodating when we were half an hour late due to traffic! Really can’t recommend this place enough!
One hour educational programme
My staff and I wanted to say a huge thank you to your team that gave us the tours. They were fantastic.
After having been for a few years, we were most impressed with the collective amount of detail and information the boys received as they went around.
In previous years, it depended on the guide you got as to how much information the boys received, but now they get the full programme, and it is delivered knowledgeably and with interest and good humour.
Please pass on our thanks to your staff, and we look forward to another visit next year!
One hour educational programme
Staff were really informative and was brilliant with the children. Enjoyed most: Finding out about the gruesome facts and learning about life on the ship! What could be improved: Nothing, the kids loved it!
Overnight Living History Experience
Absolutely fantastic! All our cubs and leaders had an amazing time on your Overnight Living History experience. The crew were brilliant and can’t praise you all enough! Than you for a night that will be hard to top!
